The Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta on Torcello dates back to 639 and is one of the earliest surviving monuments in the lagoon. Its mosaics, especially the great Last Judgment on the west wall, are among the most important Byzantine works in Italy. Marble pavements and the iconostasis enrich the interior without diminishing its essential clarity. The basilica speaks of a period when Torcello held a central place in lagoon life.
