St Paul’s Outside the Walls

St Paul’s Outside the Walls

A major pilgrimage site with a long colonnaded portico, cloister, and papal medallions, offering a spacious, contemplative atmosphere away from Rome's center.
St Paul’s Outside the Walls stands on the road to Ostia over the traditional burial place of the apostle Paul. Although rebuilt after the fire of the 19th century, it preserves the solemn basilican scale and ceremonial character of one of Rome’s major pilgrimage churches. The long colonnaded portico, cloister and papal medallions are among its principal features. Its distance from the historic centre gives it a more spacious, contemplative atmosphere.
