Trajan’s Market, built into the slope behind Trajan’s Forum, is one of the most sophisticated surviving commercial complexes of ancient Rome. Spread across several levels, it contained shops, offices and circulation spaces that reveal a highly advanced approach to urban planning. Vaulted halls and brick façades give the ruins much of their character today. The site suggests the practical as well as the ceremonial side of imperial Rome.
