Santa Maria del Carmine

Santa Maria del Carmine

Famous for its Brancacci Chapel, this site features transformative frescoes by Masaccio, Masolino, and Lippi, showcasing early Renaissance art's evolution.
Santa Maria del Carmine is best known for the Brancacci Chapel, one of the key sites of early Renaissance painting. Though much of the church was rebuilt after an 18th-century fire, the chapel preserves the great fresco cycle by Masaccio, Masolino and Filippino Lippi depicting scenes from the life of St Peter. These works transformed the language of painting through their use of perspective, light and human presence. The church remains essential to any study of Florentine art.
