Isola Bella, one of the Borromean Islands on Lake Maggiore, is shaped by the presence of the 17th-century Palazzo Borromeo and its formal gardens. The palace interiors and art collection speak of the family’s long patronage, while the terraced gardens are arranged with statues, rare plants and wandering peacocks. The island’s transformation from rocky outcrop to cultivated retreat is part of its fascination. There is a theatrical quality to the whole ensemble, balanced by wide views across the lake.
