Isola Madre is the largest of the Borromean Islands and has long been admired for its botanical gardens and villa. The gardens are laid out with rare and exotic species and have a particularly peaceful character. Inside the 16th-century Borromeo villa, period furnishings offer an impression of aristocratic life on the lake. Peacocks and other birds roaming through the grounds add to the island’s distinctive atmosphere.
