San Giorgio Maggiore

San Giorgio Maggiore

The island features a stunning Renaissance church with a white façade, Tintoretto paintings, and offers panoramic views of Venice from its campanile.
San Giorgio Maggiore, on the island opposite Piazza San Marco, is centred on Palladio’s great Renaissance church, completed in the early 17th century. The basilica’s white façade and balanced interior exemplify Palladio’s classical ideals, while paintings by Tintoretto enrich the high altar and choir. From the campanile there are expansive views across Venice and the lagoon. The island offers a calmer, more contemplative counterpart to San Marco itself.
