San Pantalon

San Pantalon

A modest exterior hides a grand Baroque interior with an enormous ceiling painting by Giovanni Antonio Fumiani, depicting a saint's martyrdom and apotheosis.
San Pantalon is modest from the outside but unexpectedly rich within. Its chief claim to distinction is the enormous ceiling painting by Giovanni Antonio Fumiani, depicting the martyrdom and apotheosis of the saint in a grand illusionistic composition. Begun in the 17th century, the interior reflects the decorative confidence of the Baroque period. The church rewards those willing to look beyond a restrained exterior.
